NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP): The deadline is typically in October.

Ford Foundation Predoctoral Fellowship: The deadline is typically in December.

NOAA’s Dr. Nancy Foster Scholarship Program: For students who “pursue or intend to pursue a masters or doctoral level degree in oceanography, maritime archaeology or marine biology, including all science, engineering and resource management of ocean and coastal areas (or related areas), at a U.S. accredited institution.” The deadline is typically in December.

Fellowships for students pursuing postgraduate study in the UK:

  • Fulbright: For US students wishing to go abroad (US-UK Commission linked, but many other destinations possible), or for non-US students wishing to come to the US. Deadlines vary, and current undergraduates typically apply through their college.
  • Rhodes: For students from several key countries (including the US) to pursue postgraduate study at Oxford.
  • Marshall: For students from the US to pursue postgraduate study in the UK.
  • Mitchell: For students from the US to pursue postgraduate study in the Republic of Ireland or Northern Ireland. As on 2024, on pause.
  • British Council Scholarships (Commonwealth, Chevening, GREAT): For students from key countries (not including the US) to pursue postgraduate study in the UK.
  • University-specific fellowships: for example, Gates for Cambridge or Clarendon for Oxford.
  • In the UK, most PhDs are funded by studentships (e.g., UKRI, ERC, Leverhulme), some of which may accept foreign students. Virtually all of these will be advertised on FindAPhD.com, and students are encouraged to get in touch with potential PIs to discuss opportunities.
